A brief outline of the Nikon F2S Photomic manual focus SLR film camera

This page is dedicated to the superb Nikon F2S Photomic camera produced by Nikon, this was a F2 body fitted with the DP-2 viewfinder fitted. The DP-1 and DP-2 viewfinder are effectively the same from a light measuring perspective, this is reflected in the in the camera designation when fitted with these viewfinders (Nikon F2 Photomic and Nikon F2S Photomic), the obvious difference being the "S", this signifies that the viewfinder can be fitted with the with optional DS-1 which allows the camera to be operated in Shutter Priority mode.

The DP-1's moving coil meter exposure indicator was replaced with LED's, while this may seem an advantage current consumption was far higher and if left on drains the batteries at a quite alarming rate. The good news is that LED's are less susceptible to shock than moving coil meters and consequently the Nikon F2S Photomic is more reliable from a metering perspective than the basic DP-1 equipped Nikon F2 Photomic. The only other difference was an increase in the EV range of the metering system.

If the DS-1 is fitted to a Nikon F2S Photomic camera shutter speed priority becomes possible, the DS-1 connects electrically to the DP-2 viewfinder and using a servo motor powered by a NiCad battery controls the aperture ring on the lens using the lenses metering prong (Bunny Ears). The bad news is the DS-1 is large and bulky and drains the rechargeable battery inside quite rapidly, this combination only has any value to a camera collector today and unless the price is low best avoided due to the poor performance.
