Nikon F2 Photomic

A brief outline of the Nikon F2 Photomic manual focus SLR film camera

This page is dedicated to the superb Nikon F2 Photomic camera produced by Nikon, this was a F2 body fitted with the DP-1 viewfinder fitted. The DP-1 was similar in specifications to the FTn viewfinder made for the Nikon F, it was smaller partially due to the batteries now being in the cameras base rather than the viewfinder but still used a CDS cell as a light level sensor and Nikon's 60/40 centre weighed metering system, the exposure was still displayed by a moving coil meter and the aperture set on the lens was still transmitted to the metering system by Nikon's famous "bunny ears".

Nikon F viewfinders had been all powered by two 1.3 volt mercury batteries, the F2 uses two smaller S76 1.5 volt silver oxide batteries, these are easily and cheaply obtained or can be replaced by one 3 volt lithium battery, the older mercury batteries are no longer made, this is due to the negative environmental issues now associated with any batteries containing mercury, Zinc-air Wein cells are the only alternative but lack relative capacity as well as in-camera shelf life once activated.

The Nikon F2 Photomic is probably the most common F2 metered variant found second hand, it's performance is not as good as the later metering heads and this is reflected in second hand prices. The best of the metered viewfinder heads is generally said to be the  DP-12 and as these were the last to be introduced (Nikon F2AS Photomic) they included all the advances of a decade, they value of these is probably twice that of the Nikon F2 Photomic cameras on today's second hand camera market.
