Nikon F2AS Photomic

A brief outline of the Nikon F2AS Photomic manual focus SLR film camera

This page is dedicated to the superb Nikon F2AS Photomic camera produced by Nikon, this was a F2 body fitted with the DP-12 viewfinder fitted. The Nikon F2AS Photomic's exposure meter within the DP-12 viewfinder used a SPD (Silicon Photo diode) for fast and accurate response combined with solid state electronics for increased reliability, exposure information is displayed using five LED's in the viewfinder display.

Bing the last of the Nikon F2 Photonic range it was the most advanced and expensive, it is much prised for it's performance and reliability and also uses Nikon's AI (Automatic maximum aperture Indexing) system, this means that even the latest AF FX lenses will meter and work correctly as long as they posses a manual aperture ring although of course focusing must be done manually. The adoption of the AI aperture coupling system also means that the viewfinder supports Nikon's ADR (aperture-direct-readout) where the setting of the lens aperture ring is visible directly in the viewfinder via a small prism.

The DP-12 equipped  Nikon F2AS Photomic was the most expensive of the Nikon F2 variants and this is also true today on the second hand market, this is because the Nikon F2AS Photomic was the  the last of the series and therefore the most evolved of the Nikon F2 cameras, it's replacement, the Nikon F3, was electronic.

Many photographers and camera collectors today claim the Nikon F2AS Photomic was the best mechanically shuttered 35mm SLR camera ever produced!
