A brief outline of the Nikon F2A Photomic manual focus SLR film camera

This page is dedicated to the superb Nikon F2A Photomic camera produced by Nikon, this was a F2 body fitted with the DP-11 viewfinder fitted.

The DP-11 is a CdS sensored viewfinder with a moving-coil meter as an indicator as the DP-1 was on the Nikon F2 Photomic camera, the important difference is that the lens aperture coupling was made via the new AI system rather than the old prong or "Bunny Ears" method.

It should be remembered that the Nikon F2A Photomic will not work fully with pre-AI lenses as the meter remains uncoupled but the F2 Photomic camera will work correctly with either lens type as the meter prong was still fitted to the new AI lenses for backward compatibility.

Older pre AI lenses could be converted by Nikon to AI specification to overcome this problem, however this service is no longer available.

The DP-11 viewfinder fitted to the Nikon F2A Photomic lacks the necessary electrical contacts to connect to the DS-1 so automated shutter priority is not possible with this camera although this is of little significance as the DS-1 was a bulky and power thirsty device by later standards.

The DP-11 equipped Nikon F2A Photomic is the second most numerous variant of the Nikon F2 series and this fact is reflected in relatively low second hand prices.
