Nikon F301 (N2000)

A brief outline of the Nikon F301 manual focus SLR film camera

The Nikon F301 (N2000 in the US) camera was effectively a Nikon 501 body without focus and went on sale a year before it's AF cousin as Nikon's first true AF body represented a major technological challenge. Although their was no AF the F301 (N2000) still had a significant first for a manual focus Nikon 35mm film camera, this was a built in motor drive, rewind however was still achieved with a manual folding crank like preceding Nikon SLR film cameras. The large amount of parts which were identical in the 301 and 501 allowed Nikon produce and market the cameras faster and cheaper that otherwise possible. The 301 represented a really good buy but the potential market shrunk rapidly after a few years in favour of newer Auto Focus cameras like the Nikon 501.

Nikon 301 cameras are not considered collectable or classic which has resulted in second hand fully working examples being sold regularly for less than $30 - An ideal introduction today in to the world of 35mm film photography and the Nikon lens system while retaining relatively traditional Nikon styling and build quality.

The viewfinder of the Nikon F301 (N2000) is fully digital using LED's to convey all information to the photographer including shutter speed in a numeric format, and the inclusion of a built in motor drive facilitated the use of an intervalometer.

The body design of the Nikon F301 (N2000) incorporates a significant amount of polycarbonate but the camera does not feel as "plastic" as many of the later Nikon camera models.
