Nikkormat FT3

A brief outline of the Nikkormat FT3 manual focus SLR film camera

This page is dedicated to the superb Nikkormat FT3 camera produced by Nikon, the Nikkormat FT3 was the last of the range of cameras produced with the shutter speed control ring and film speed dial mounted co-axially around the lens, all future Nikon manual focus cameras would have their shutter control on the right side of the top plate next to the film advance lever as had always been the case on Nikon's professional 35mm SLR film cameras.

As the last of the mechanical shutter Nikkormat's it possesses all the advances that had been made over time with the the whole Nikkormat range as well as some found on the Flagship Nikon F2 camera.

The Nikkormat FT3 is identical to the earlier Nikkormat FT2 apart from the old Nikon prong (Bunny ears) aperture coupling system being replaced with Nikon's new AI (Automatic maximum aperture Indexing) system. It had been intended to replace the Nikkormat FT2 with the new Nikon FM but market forces resulted in a

stop-gap solution being required for a period of about six months, the Superb Nikkormat FT3 was Nikons solution.

The Nikkormat FTN had already set an industry benchmark in both performance and reliability, the Nikkormat FT2 improved it's ergonomics, and the Nikkormat FT3 added AI coupling capability to the design, these last two cameras represent the last word in the evolution of the mechanically shuttered Nikkormat range.
